Giving More Than A Little Heart And Soul

It’s been awhile since I poured my heart and soul into something. That’s not to say that I haven’t been giving it my all as a mother. But when it comes to my life and my role outside of motherhood, it’s been awhile since I’ve felt that sense of accomplishment.

I can’t believe it has been seven years since AJ and me upped and moved to a new state at the end of January 2011 to begin the first all-digital triathlon magazine from the ground up with little to no resources. It made us proud, and I’m still flabbergasted at how much we were able to accomplish just the two of us. I was sad that the magazine folded when we decided to come back to Colorado to raise Emma.

When I started as a teacher in 2005, I was starting a new career opening my wings and jumping right in. Taking on this book project, I am starting to feel that sense of accomplishment. You can even say that starting to see my blog as a viable income option is an achievement as well.

Things I have learned:

  • Book writers are most likely not in it for the money (at least guidebook writers)
  • Never compare the time spent to the money made (a few book writing friends have mentioned this)
  • Seeing the progress has been a huge motivator
  • Visualization (like seeing my book on the shelves at Barnes and Noble in my mind) has made getting up at 5 AM to get writing done worth it
  • The many colors and shapes the clouds can take during a sunrise (my office window faces east)
  • It feels good to make a long time dream come true
  • I’ve changed myself into a night and morning person (this is out of necessity with the workload and having to juggle Emma as well)

This brings me back to a TED Talk by Adam Baker about doing what you love. I am definitely doing more of that in my life now working on me, exploring the world with my two adventure mates (AJ and Emma), writing a book and sharing my families love of the outdoors with others on my blog. I still need to work on the “selling the crap part”, but I’m getting the financial parts worked out. I am doing what I love within my means. And that feels pretty good!
